Lying on the bank of the Mekong River, opposite Sawannakhet of Laos, Mukdahan is a peaceful province in the northeast of Thailand. The province covers an area of 4,339 square kilometers and consists of seven districts, including Kham Cha-I, Muang, Don Tan, Nikhom Kham Soi, Dong Luang, Nong Sung and Wan Yai and eight tribes of Thai people: Kha, Soe, Phu T’ai, Saek, Yu, Kar Lerng, Kula and Thai-Lao, in which each tribe has its own distinct culture and tradition.

Mukdahan has its history dating from the late Ayutthaya period, over two centuries ago. Firstly, the province was inhabited by Ban Luang Phon Sin community ruled by Chao Chan Suriyawong. A new town called “Mukdahan” was built on the right bank of the Mekong River by his son named Chao Kinnari in 1767 and completed in 1770. In 1907, Mukdahan was an Amphoe of Nakhon Phanom province and became Mukdahan province in 1982.

Almost Mukdahan’s area is covered with thick dense forest and mountains. It’s an agricultural province with high plateau. Being a riverside province, Mukdahan features a lot of picturesque sceneries, fantastic natural rock parks and beautiful views. The province is also famed for its sweet tamarind, spectacular mountains, origin of Phaya River, picturesque Monorom Mount, valuable ancient drums and beautiful Kra Bao Islet. It has the mixture of interesting cultures and diversified tribes since ancient times. It also hosts abundant natural beauty.

Some popular historical sites can be found in Mukdahan as Wat Si Mongkhon Tai temple, Luang Pho Yai a Buddha image, Chaopho Chaofa Mung Mueang Shrine, Chaomae Song Nang Pho Nong Shrine, etc. Three national parks bring relaxation for tourists, including Phu Mu Forest Park, Mukdahan National Park and Phu Sa Dok Bua National Park. To understand deeper about the culture of this land, tourists can come to visit on the festival season to join in festivals as Mukdahan Red Cross Fair, Bun Duean Hok or Bun Bang Fai Festival and Boat Races, with many interesting activities and performances.
