King's Birthday
Considered one of the most important days in Thailand, the 5 December is celebrated to honor the birthday of His Majesty the King Bhumibol Adulyadej the Great - the ninth monarch of Chakri Dynasty and the longest-reigning monarch in the history of Thailand.
People take part in several activities to show their love and loyalty to the monarch. Since the King is symbolic father of Thailand, the day is also designated to be the National Father’s Day.
His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej the Great has reigned the country from June 9, 1946. His name signifies "Strength of the Land, incomparable Power". The king is respected for his generosity and caring towards his subjects. Therefore, in his birthday, as a national holiday, Thai people want to express their respect to the King and also the Queen by hanging the portraits of the royal couple at their houses. Public places and houses are decorated with lights, national flags are flown everywhere. People also take part in alms-giving ritual, candlelight ceremony and other religious rites to pray for His Majesty for good health, happiness and strength to reign the country.
