Fon in the north Thailand

Bookmark and Share

The northern Thailand is the home of the world's famous Thai classical dance, the Fon. The Fon Thai has existed for hundreds of years as a performing art for the royal courts of old Siam. Nowadays, the Fon dancers perform at temples, helping to retaining the tradition.

This art can ooze and emphasize the charm of Thai girls through beautiful dresses and lissome body movement in unison. Pairs of pretty dancers, sometimes up to hundreds of people onimportant occasions, move gracefully and rhythmically like colorful butterflies on the dance floor. Each performance is a harmonious combination of visual spectacle and exceptionally pleasing Thai instruments.

The Fon is developed in five variations: "FonTian" or the Candle Dance; “Fon Leb" or the Finger nail Dance; “Fon Ngiew" or the Scarf Dance; “Fon Marn Gumm Ber" or the Butterfly Dance; and “Fon Marn Mong Kol" or the Happy Dance. Each of these is accompanied by a special orchestra of traditional Thai musical instruments and each has its distinctive tempo and movement.

The Fon is highly appreciated by its aesthetic values, a national treasure that must be protected now and forever.
