Thailand, the tropical heaven of Southeast Asia, has population of 67 million, ranking 20th on the list of the world’s most populous countries. It also has a large number of ethnics groups, which promises to bring visitors mixture of exciting things ahead. In recent years, the country witnesses a downturn in population growth rate thanks to highly successful government-sponsored family planning program. Instead, it is immigration that is becoming a potentially principal contributor to the country’s population increase. Thailand is a major recipient of immigrants from Cambodia, Burma, and Laos, which leads to reduction in population’s homogeneity. Thailand represents an immense diversity in ethnicity. The beautiful country has many distinct ethnic groups, including the majority Thai and numerous hill tribes. The Thai or ethnic Tai accounts for up to 75 percent of population, far-exceeding 14 percent of Thai Chinese. The remaining 11 percent belongs to other minority groups.

Thailand's population in 2013 is estimated to stand at 67 million, compared to 55.2 million in 1989, according to the US Bureau of the Census. In recent years, the population growth rate has slowed down substantially, from averaged 1.05 in the years 1988-1998 to 0.5 in 2008-2013. These downturns are achieved thanks to the successful enactment of national level family planning program.
